Saturday 3 October 2026 | 10am–12pm
Geographe Bay Yacht Club

Ever wondered what it’s like to sail?

Now’s your chance to get out on the water and give sailing a go – completely FREE!

Geographe Bay Yacht Club is opening its doors to the community for our Discover Sailing Day on Saturday 3 October, inviting adults and children aged 6 years and over to come along, step aboard a sailing boat and experience what sailing is all about.

You don’t need to be a sailor. You don’t need to own a boat. And you don’t need to be a member of the Club.

Just bring your sense of adventure!

Get out on the water

Discover Sailing Day is designed as a fun, relaxed introduction to sailing. You’ll have the opportunity to head out on the water with experienced sailors, experience a sailing dinghy and discover why so many people love being on the water.

It’s also a chance to have a look around GBYC, meet some of our sailors and find out about the many ways you can continue sailing if you enjoy your first taste.

Sailing is a sport for all sorts of people and all sorts of ages. You can sail for fun, learn new skills, meet people, race, volunteer, crew for someone else or simply enjoy being out on the water.

And importantly, you don’t have to own a boat to sail. There are opportunities to sail in club boats and connect with boat owners looking for crew.

Who can come along?

Discover Sailing Day is open to the public and is suitable for:

  • Adults wanting to try something new
  • Families wanting to give sailing a go together
  • Kids aged 6 years and over
  • Anyone who has always wondered what sailing is like
  • Anyone who has sailed before and would like to get back on the water

You just need to be water confident.

Registration is essential

Everyone who wants to try sailing must be registered individually.

This is really important – if you are bringing your family or a group of friends, please register every person who will be getting on a boat, not just the person making the booking.

As part of registration, participants will be asked to register for a free SailPass, which provides the required Australian Sailing insurance coverage for the Discover Sailing session.

You do not need to become a GBYC member to take part.

What should you bring?

You’ll be on the water, so come prepared to potentially get a little wet!

Please bring:

  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle
  • Towel
  • Change of clothes
  • Lunch or snacks

Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for being around the water are recommended.

Boats and sailing equipment will be provided by the Club.

What happens after you’ve had a go?

Hopefully, you’ll have discovered that sailing is something you’d like to do again!

Our team will be on hand to tell you about the sailing opportunities available at GBYC, including Learn to Sail courses, junior sailing, ongoing sailing programs, club sailing and ways to get involved as a crew member.

Discover Sailing Day is simply the starting point. You can decide where you want your sailing journey to take you.

So, if you’ve ever thought “I’d love to try sailing one day”, this is your opportunity.

Come down, get on a boat and see where the wind takes you.
